A drug is physical

A drug is a physical process which affects the body. An experience is a physical process which affects the body. Make the experience precise enough, and it can be just as refined in mechanism as any drug.

Our technological process of integration looks like moving from experiences of addiction to experiences of growth and freedom. That is, our experience of “technology” (increasingly the experience of our Self; we are already cyborgs) will be one of becoming rather than that of vapid stimulation.

So far, we have optimised for the nicotine experience of green and blue swipes. The next step is to optimise for wellbeing. In the future, the laptop slump and the smartphone crick will be thought extraordinary. In the future, the very mechanism, the simple use, of technology will make us healthier. Why would it not?
