Now we have the first wave, and there’s a split: Those with enough, materially speaking, and internally a sense of lack, will continue to acquire their symbols of abundance; Those with enough, materially speaking, and internally a sense of abundance, will zone in on the spectrum of meaning that objects provide.
There are things a pocket computer cannot be. It cannot be a bed, for example. It cannot be a kettle, and it cannot be a teacup. As we lose our symbols, it seems, the things a pocket computer cannot replace become increasingly valuable to this second set. There’s a surge in interest in handmade, homemade, wabi-sabi[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wabi-sabi], antique… turning up the meaning dial for these objects of irreducible function.
